to those with & without children

we don't have children, but we want them.

our story as of yet isn't of infertility, years of trying, or miscarriages. my heart aches for those who are enduring this season; i cannot even begin to imagine this reality.

my story is of mismanagement of personal debt & my husband's selfless love to take on this story as his own, too. our story is of marrying early & growing up together. our story is in the waiting.

you see, for a couple of years now, i have quietly held onto the hope that soon we would be ready for a house full of babies.

throughout these years, we've watched our closest friends fill their homes with new life & celebrated in their joys. throughout these years, we've listened to breastfeeding/home birth/hospital birth/homeschooling/unschooling/public schooling/private schooling conversations with nothing to add. throughout these years, we've learned from our dearest friends & gathered tools for our parenting toolbox.

throughout these years, we've paid off our debt a little at a time, slow & steady. throughout these years, we've been given a home & farm on which to grow & deeply love. throughout these years, we've waited. & we're still waiting.

you see, if i had a quarter for every person who has asked when we plan on having a family - as if we don't ask ourselves that question every. single. day. & as if we don't already have our own little family - i would be rich & then pay off my debt & have that baby.

through the years of waiting, i have finally realized that we are, in fact, not broken & we are allowed to embrace this season.

my intention for sharing our story is that maybe you too are waiting for children (or maybe you do not want them at all) yet you feel broken or as if you're missing out because you don't have a house full.

friends, we are not missing out on life. in fact, we're filling our house with memories & meaningful relationships. we're growing in our love together & we're growing as individuals with rich experiences & interests.

our story is not in the waiting. it's much more than that.

to those without children -

our story is of meals shared together without high chairs.
our story is of uninterrupted sleep at night.
our story is of date nights on a whim.
our story is of completed projects in one sitting.
our story is of glass cups & real plates.
our story is of only two loads of laundry.
our story is of wiping only our own butts, noses & mouths.

our story is of hosting baby showers for expectant parents.
our story is of signing up for kids church & nursery.
our story is of holding our friends' babies when they need a break.
our story is of babysitting so others can enjoy a date night.
our story is of loving our friends' littles as our own.

to those with children -

allow us into your story.
trust us with your littles.
let us read books to your children & hold your new babies.
invite us over to your mommy play dates. we need play dates, too.
drink coffee with us & join us for a girls' weekend every once in awhile.
don't apologize for your dirty house. we have dirty houses, too.

to those with & without children -

let us learn from each other & not divide.
let us not put each other down for having too much or not enough free time.
let us punch jealousy square in the face when it prevents us from savoring what we already have.
let us invite each other into our own struggles so we may find commonality & friendship.
let us listen more & speak less.

let us celebrate, embrace & cherish this season. we have things worth saying, feelings worth feeling, & thoughts worth sharing with or without babies.

natalie

quick pickled sugar snap peas recipe

so, i kind of flipped out when my gal pal, melissa, over at tend shared her pickled sugar snap peas. we are happily swimming in sugar snaps right now. i go out to the garden during my snack break & chow down on about twenty at a time while harvesting from our large trellis of sugar snap peas. they're delicious & perfect. no hummus needed.

in an effort to preserve this deliciousness for later in the summer, i decided to quick pickle my own sugar snap peas. i scoured the internet for the very best sugar snap pea recipe i could find. i came across the glorious smitten kitchen & her pickled sugar snap pea recipe. sadly, it had sugar. so, using her recipe as my guidepost, i created my own quick pickled sugar snap peas recipe. you can find most of these ingredients in your pantry so get to picklin' quick!

quick pickled sugar snap peas recipe
(makes around 2 jars)

2 cups white distilled vinegar
2 cups cold water
1 1/2 tablespoons pickling salt
1 1/2 tablespoons honey
enough sugar snaps to fill two jars, trimmed
5 garlic cloves, minced
pinch of dried pepper flakes

in a saucepan, heat the vinegar with the salt & honey until it's dissolved. this only takes a couple of minutes. remove the saucepan from the heat & add cold water. place in the freezer until the liquid is completely cool.

while the vinegar mixture is cooling, trim your sugar snap peas. some prefer to remove the string, but i don't bother. once all of your sugar snap peas are trimmed, set them aside.

place garlic & dried pepper flakes into the bottom of your jars. pack your sugar snap peas into your jar as tightly as you can. i usually turn my jar on it's side & stuff my sugar snap peas in that way. shorter jars are best.

when the vinegar mixture is cool, place a funnel over your jar & pour the brine until all of the sugar snaps in the jar are completely covered. cover your jar with a lid & place in the refrigerator. begin chowing down after about 24 hours, or less, depending on your willpower.

(quick pickled sugar snaps must be refrigerated. i only added them to this shelf for the cuteness factor & to take a quick picture)

what are some of your favorite quick pickling recipes?

our 2014 summer manifesto

during the dark & chilly days of this past winter season, it was so much fun to check off our winter list. we made the most of time indoors with potlucks, hot cocoa & knitting. inspired by our winter list, luke & i made a summer manifesto for the upcoming months!

i am so thankful we are not moving this summer. we have moved every. single. summer. for the last seven years. that kind of moving gets exhausting. instead of sitting poolside, we're usually packing boxes & hauling furniture. hands to the heavens, we're staying put this summer (& many, many more to come)!! this summer i intend to slow down & enjoy the best of what these long, warm days have to offer.

our 2014 summer manifesto:
- ride bikes on the trails
- grow a garden
- picnic in the park
- go to the beach
- drive-in movie
- make eggplant parmesan
- host a canning workshop (august 16th... more to come, friends!)
- go swimming (at least once a week)
- watch fireworks
- brew tour by bicycle
- grill out on the patio
- host a summer farm party with friends
- make homemade ice cream
- gift neighbors with baskets of garden-grown vegetables
- make refrigerator pickles
- go camping
- attend outdoor concerts in gulley park
- make s'mores around the fire pit
- make pesto
- drink homemade pineapple lemonade
- sit on the porch just because
- take many trips to the lake
- visit the farmers' market as much as possible

how do you celebrate summer? i'd love to read what you have planned!

how we save: affordable style

i think it's pretty funny that i am sharing my thoughts on personal style today. really, it all started when i chose my word "quality" for 2014. that little word meant so many things to me, but specifically it meant how i cared for myself.

at the time i rarely thought about how i felt & who i was in terms of how i dressed. i wore yoga pants most days because they're more acceptable than pajamas. bonus points: it looked like i was going to the gym every day (i wasn't). once my 2014 word was chosen, #dressinhappinessdaily (join us on instagram!) was born & my journey toward self-care began. you can read more about my self-care thoughts here.

throughout this little journey, my habits have changed but my budget hasn't.

i'm still that gal who wants to feel cute while wearing clothing with integrity & staying within a small budget. what does that look like for me? about $50 to spend on clothing in a good month. sometimes we only budget $25 for clothing & other months we remove the category from our budget completely.

you won't find high fashion or "how to wear neon" here. on today's blog post, you will find some simple outfits & a few ways to shop well while spending a little less cash. here are five tips & tricks to make your budget & closet work for you...

side note: i have been thinking about & documenting outfits for this blog post for some time. during that time, i have also lost about 15 lb. i realize i look somewhat different in some of these photos, but it's still me! more on my weight loss journey (struggles) soon...

1. shop your closet: i love making my old clothes do. actually, i love making my old clothes fabulous. the very best way to save money? shop from your closet. the floral dress up above has been in my closet for years. paired with my normal go-to cardigan & jeans along with a funky necklace & my bright yellow sandals makes this outfit fun. i picked up that necklace at a thrift shop for less than $2. score!

2. pop some tags: shopping at thrift shops is more popular now than ever as it should be! big props to macklemore. it's exciting to find a piece of clothing you eyed in the store just a few short months ago.  it's also less expensive & sustainable. the navy & white shirt up above was picked up from goodwill for $3. tip: i keep a little list in my purse of items i am looking for at the thrift store.

3. always re-style: i waited forever to purchase a maxi dress. i almost caved & bought one at a department store that was just ok. i am so thankful that i waited because a week later while shopping at goodwill, i found two fantastic maxi dresses originally from the loft for $4 each. they're so versatile, too. up above i am wearing the same dress but styled differently. in the first photo, i threw on a loose fitting top with a funky necklace for date night. the other look included my go-to cardigan with matching earrings & sandals for work.

4. inexpensive accessories can make an old outfit feel new: in both photos above, i freshened up my outfits with inexpensive accessories. i purchased the belt from a yard sale for just a couple of bucks. it works perfectly with dresses & loose tops to give some definition to my waist. in the other photo, i purchased that bag from the thrift shop. it makes me feel like i am heading to the beach! it's so fun how one little change to an outfit can make it feel like you've never worn it before.

5. host a clothing swap & embrace hand-me-downs: my girlfriends & i get together for a clothing swap every season. it's a great time to hang out while cleaning out your closet, grabbing a couple of free clothing items & saving money. it makes me so happy when i see my friends rocking a dress or shirt i just couldn't pull off. the photo at the very top was originally my mom's shirt! she passes down clothing to me all the time & i embrace her generous gifts! if you don't want to host a swap, find a friend who is similar in size to you & trade clothing.

i hope some of these tips were helpful. remember, you are so worth those few extra minutes each day & it doesn't have to break the bank.

do you have any suggestions for how to save money while dressing well? please share!

teacher gift idea - diy mason jar to-go cups

i absolutely love creating little goodies for those who bless & serve others. i happen to know some incredible women who volunteer in the school garden where i work. at the end of our spring semester with our students, i gifted these little mason jar to-go cups full of goodies to them. they were a huge hit so i thought i'd share a simple tutorial of how i made them. if you're searching for an inexpensive teachers gift idea, this is perfect!

i squealed when i found these regular mouth ball mason jar lids & straws at target. they're less than $5 for 4 sets at the store so don't be fooled by amazon's expensive price tag.

i grabbed two regular mouth mason jars from my canning cupboard & filled them with goodies - crinkly strips of colorful paper from target, chocolates & caramel. every amazing person who serves needs chocolate - can i get an amen?!

i dug through my scrapbooking goodies & made tags with card stock. i added a cute initial sticker to personalize each of their gifts. i wrapped the mason jar with strips of fabric cut into ribbon & hung the tag with string. i added a little thank you card from white willow grove (giveaway coming soon!) & a little glitter clothespin for an extra pop of cute.

do you have any fabulous & inexpensive volunteer or teacher gift ideas? please share!
