date night idea: hiking & a picnic for under $15!

on valentine's day we were gifted with the perfect weather.

we packed up our bags, put on our hiking shoes, prepared a little lunch & headed out to one of our favorite trails.

on this particular valentine's day, we were working with a next-to-nothing budget, having spent most of our date night money for the month on takeout pizza when i was under the weather from my wisdom teeth surgery.

a hiking date fit the budget & left me feeling more connected to my husband than any dinner out could have.

often times i think we get so caught up in the glamour of an expensive dinner out & a movie at the theater. i know i feel loved when luke offers to take me out to my favorite sushi restaurant.

there's absolutely nothing wrong with a fancy dinner out (heck, i love being treated to delicious food!), but i am challenging myself to feel loved when he offers his time, not necessarily expensive date nights.

we walked along the trails, talked about our dreams & processed through some big stuff within our relationship. he's my favorite person, my biggest adventure & the best hiking partner!

we even packed a little lunch for two of cheeses, almond crackers, salami & turkey along with two glasses of wine. this little gourmet lunch cost us around $15, the perfect price for our quickly dwindling budget.

& if you've got kiddos, bring them along! i'm sure they'd love to see their parents holding hands along the trail!

i'd love to know how you date on a budget! please share your fun ideas!
love,
natalie

p.s. here's another fun budget-friendly date night i shared not too long ago - a drive-in movie date for under $15! yay!

snow days & dreaming of spring colors

we finally experienced a little taste of winter with our very first snow day of the season!

it's been unseasonably warm here so with the promise of a few inches of snow, we immediately celebrated with pancakes & a walk in the wintry mix.

i used to dread winter & it's cold, dark days. in our first years of marriage, i very much suffered from seasonal depression. i still have my days, but once we moved onto the farm, my perspective drastically shifted.

i love the slow days of this season & having my farmer home more during the winter. this season allows us time to dig deep into other hobbies & interests. it's also a time to reconnect & enjoy long conversations by the wood burning stove.

and of course, our animals are not the biggest fans of the snow. our hens would rather stay inside their toasty warm coop. the goats tend to linger in the barn for much longer than usual. little george, one of our sweet new bucks, is such a charmer.

but with winter & it's promise of slower days, i am still drawn to the colors of spring.

pictured above is "the skinny," a new thinner version of my classic reversible handmade headband!
my etsy shop reopens on thursday at 8am cst. i have been ordering & collecting fabric for months just for this shop update. as the landscapes grew more bare, my cart at the fabric store grew brighter!

i love that as a creative, i can create & channel what's stirring within even if it's a reflection of what's to come, not what is.

these last couple of months have been challenging as a business owner. i've gotten caught up in the detective role, seeking out copycats & allowing them to dim that inner light.

this shop opening was a response to that. i'm letting go & focusing just on my creative stirrings. i'm playing & sewing with bright colors & bringing in bits of glittery (in the form of the happiest gold elastic!) in my work.

i'm also dreaming of the spring garden. i am so very happy with my "spring bee" happy flag collection. i cannot wait to share it with you on thursday!
@pen_and_paint, @tweetpotatopie, @lollyjaneblog, @chas_holmquist
& as always, i am so incredibly thankful for those who purchase my goods & believe in my work. it's such an honor to see my customers adorning their homes with the work of my hands. it's a gift that will never wear out or grow old.

how are you doing today? what do your days look like during the wintertime? what is stirring your heart & inspiring you to create?
love,
natalie

p.s. i'll see you on thursday, february 19th, at 8 am cst at my shop!

valentine's day craft party with shindig paperie

i learned one thing this week.

lit candles & tissue paper don't mix.

in the midst of making tissue tassel garlands, we had a little fire incident & i'm not even kidding you- these gals kept crafting. they didn't miss a beat! we stomped on that fire & with ashes in our hair, we kept craftin'. y'all, these gals are my people.

this week was the valentine's day craft party led by yours truly & the fabulous shindig paperie! aside from a few flames, it was an absolute blast!

we sipped fancy cocktails by the amazing jen lewis & enjoyed good conversation over a handful of valentine's day-inspired crafts. we savored mini cupcakes & a fabulous chocolate bar filled with chocolate-dipped strawberries & pink m&m's.

the gals were even surprised with swag bags filled to the brim by generous sponsors! the gals took home tiny succulents with mini happy flags that i will be debuting in my shop very soon! yay!

i led the girls in instruction on making tissue tassel garlands in pinks, red, white & gold colors.

we also made valentines for our favorite people, including hand-lined envelopes & pretty embellishments. these girls take card making very seriously. love it!

y'all. i can't even get over the fact that i get to meet & teach amazing gals with a passion for living creatively. it fills my heart & blesses me so.

& so i am absolutely thrilled to announce a little workshop i will be hosting in my hometown area with my girl brandy of bella vita jewelry! more info will be on the blog monday along with registration details, but you do not want to miss this fun afternoon!

my central arkansas home girls, mark your calendars! i can't wait to hug your necks!

20 random acts of kindness for $5 or less

i love valentine's day for one big reason: it's the perfect excuse to love on people.

i'm not necessarily talking about your spouse or boo. i'm talkin' about the mailman, your grandma & the stranger at the grocery store. it's a day to love on those marginalized folk who need a hug & a little "i'm thinkin' of you."

of course, random acts of kindness can get pricey. we sometimes feel like we don't have the time, means or finances for frivolous gifts or kind gestures. got kiddos? get the whole family involved & make it a day of fun! skip your afternoon coffee & save that $5 for valentine's day when you can rock another's day! we all have five bucks & five minutes for another, friends.

today i am sharing 20 random acts of kindness that cost $5 or less!

1. stop by the plant nursery & pick up your favorite small house plant. replant it in a hand-painted terra cotta pot & gift it to your favorite teacher for his or her classroom!

2. make handmade stationery & write a card to your grandma!

3. buy a $5 bouquet of fresh flowers from the grocery store & gift it to your favorite single lady!

4. print off free printables from pinterest & gift them to your best gal pals!

5. collect a stack of your favorite movies & share them with a friend who's under the weather!

6. buy a friend her favorite cinnamon roll & drop it by her house with the text, "you've been rolled!"

7. write words of encouragement on post-it notes & stick them to car windows in the grocery store parking lot!

8. bake chocolate chip cookies for the mail carrier!

9. gift your favorite gal pals fake tattoos & spend the evening acting like you're 18 again!

10. write a handwritten note to your in-laws thanking them for the gift of their family!

11. host a movie night at your house for your youth group! pop some popcorn & watch scary movies!

12. purchase a $5 gift card to your favorite coffee shop & place it in a public place with a little note that says "you are loved!"

13. print a 5x7 recent photo of your friend's kiddos from facebook & frame it. gift it to her on valentine's day! you know she probably feels like she doesn't have time to do it herself!

14. write a haiku poem for a friend in a funk creatively sharing just how awesome she really is!

15. purchase colorful nail polish from walgreens & host a girls' night in (with lots of chocolate) for all of your single lady friends!

16. write lunch box notes & give them to your kiddos to share with their friends in the lunch line!

17. bake your favorite dessert for the nearby nursing home! bonus points if you dress up as cupid & deliver them!

18. invite your neighbors over for dinner!

19. sneak into your parents' house & clean their kitchen!

20. pay for the stranger's coffee behind you in the starbucks drive-thru line!

i'd love to read your favorite random acts of kindness! please share!
love,
natalie

p.s. if you'd like to play along & share your random acts of kindness for $5 from this list or your own imagination, tag your photos on instagram with #createrandomacts ... yay!

photo garland diy

hello, friends!

each time i share a photo of our little dining area, i am always asked how i made my photo garland.

i'm not quite sure where i got the inspiration to make our little garland, other than loving family photos in every corner of our home. photos speak memories to me & remind me of all of the good stuff life holds. we need these happy reminders in our home, yes?

this is by far the easiest home decor diy ever.

simply gather your supplies.

you will need:
- mini clothespins
- string, pom pom yarn (purchased at michaels) or baker's twine
- strips of fabric, lace trim & more
- thumbtacks
- square photos (i love the postalpix app for printing instagram images from your phone)

to make this photo garland, hang your string of choice with thumbtacks on the wall or draped over a chalkboard. clothespin your favorite photos to your strings. bundle up your fabric strips, trim & more to each side & pin to the wall with thumbtacks.

change out your photos with each season or as you wish!

how do you creatively & inexpensively add photos to your home?
love,
natalie
