how we budget: a miss money bags giveaway!

our family has been budgeting for a little over five years now. we use our own simplified version of the dave ramsey cash system. this means we budget every little penny we spend down to our toothpaste & underwear & place each category of cash in a separate envelope. once we run out of money in our envelopes for the month, we are forced to stop spending.

we feel a lot of freedom in budgeting this way because we can predict what our expenses will be & we allot money for those monthly costs. it is also a way for us to save up for trips & projects that we otherwise wouldn't be able to do if we didn't budget & save money.

when we first started budgeting, i carried around a thick stack of white, paper envelopes with a rubber band wrapped around them. it was a hassle trying to go through all of my envelopes when paying the cashier at a shop & the envelopes had to be replaced often. once i was fed up with that system, i purchased a cheap cardboard coupon organizer. that system wasn't my favorite either because the cardboard didn't last all that long & the money slipped out of the sections easily. i was stumped until i came across the miss money bag wallets on sara's blog. i connected with sarah about a year ago & soon after had a handmade cash envelope wallet of my own that i have carried around since.

sarah was generous enough to surprise me a couple of weeks ago with a new wallet sporting some new & improved features. i am over the moon for sarah's wallets. they're easy to use, very practical & they make the cash system actually cute. a huge upgrade from my stack of white envelopes & rubber bands. her wallets feature separate "envelopes" with an adorable little label on the front for writing each spending category. the new wallet design also has an awesome pouch with a zipper sewn in to make carrying around change easier. there are several pockets in the front for storing your debit cards, business cards & license. i also keep a little notebook in the back pocket for writing down lists of what i might need from the thrift shop or grocery store.

sarah contacted me not too long ago & asked if i would be willing to host a miss money bags giveaway for one of her wallets on my blog. i jumped at the opportunity because the truth is- her shop is one of my very favorites on etsy. i love her personal aesthetic, attention to detail & craftsmanship.

so, would you like a miss money bags wallet? we're hosting a giveaway of either a bifold wallet or cash envelope wallet of your choice!

all you have to do is:

Oh! I have been shopping around for a wallet for a while now for our cash system. We save the way you do but if we run out of an envelop, I take from another. With 3 kids, things just pop up! Plus, with our savings method, we might be able to have our little farm dream come true soon!

I have bank envelopes in my wallet for my different categories. This wallet would be amazing!!

We save money by buying our kids off season clothes for our kids.

I also think just continually reminding ourselves everything we have is Gods and he is entrusting us to steward it well helps save money.

Wow! If I don't win (of course I hope I do!) I really need to buy one of these. We started a financial overhaul about three years ago when we were sinking in an ocean of credit card debt. This past June we celebrated freedom from that! It was a long hard process. I never want to be in that situation again. Even if you have no debt things come up and you really needed that 1200 in the bank to pay for a car repair. We are moving on to the next phase of our financial overhaul. Would love this wallet to keep our envelope system more organized (and pretty!). Budgeting is often seen as restrictive but in reality it's very much a giver of freedom. I don't have Facebook so thank you for not making that the only requirement like so many other contests do. I do love my Instagram though! My email is abmaust at gmail dot com.

This year we're saving money by buying and preserving lots of produce while it's in season, to avoid going to the store (where we spend way more) as often, later in the year.

This is so cute and so smart! I would absolutely love to win this amazing wallet! Having recently returned from serving 27 months in Ukraine with the Peace Corps, I am beginning my "grown-up" life and starting the budgeting process. So far I have learned to avoid clearance racks-just because it's only $8.00 does not mean that I need the cute shirt with birds on it! I definitely feel that a wallet like this would be very beneficial for a budgeting newbie like me and would start me off on the right track to budget success!

Oh! It's like I'm reading my own story minus the happy wallet ending! Ha! We use a loose version of dave's system as well and it's phenomenal how much money is saved. It's so hard to stay on track but so worth it! Growing up my mom had a set of two wallets that had slots for coupons and money and I always adored them. I'm always on the lookout for a good way to store my cash and this wallet seems perfect!!

The way I cut costs in our budget is to coupon and add match as well as meal planning- we only buy what we will use in a weeks time. I also bulk up my pantry when I find really good deals on items that I know I'm going to use and that helps cut costs in the long haul.

Have a blessed week Lady! I love your blog!

I have been following you on instagram for a while now, and this is the first time I've commented on your blog!

Food is definitely my biggest spending category. I love cooking food for friends and sometimes it feels like I shop for way more than just one person. The biggest thing I've done to save on groceries is taking a job at the natural foods store in my town. I automatically save 20% with the employee discount and I am more aware of sales, day olds, and ugly/cheap produce that needs a home. It's saved me a lot!

I use Mint to track my expenses, but I don't have a good method of how I've set my budgets.

We're fortunate to live close to a more progressive library for our area. They have an amazing and large selection of donated and discarded used books, as well as an area with donated magazines for the taking. I keep a few little jars for loose change around our home and limit myself to taking a small thrifted change purse of coins for purchasing books when we visit. I've come home with a few awesome whole foods based cookbooks and fun vintage books for our kids on more than one occasion. They also host painting classes for around five dollars a session, free music concerts under the gazebo and so many great activities for the kids (bubble shows, dinosaur fossils, you name it). Next year we will participate in their seed library program to further our garden production, and our son will join their free Lego club when he turns five this Halloween (he's so excited!). We really are blessed that this library is available as a place to please our wants for little indulgences (buying the books/free magazines) and also gives us an opportunity to socialize and do extracurricular activities without guilty costs.

In the literal sense I take money from my paycheck and put it in our savings account first. That money is then gone. I pick a set amount and it's transferred every payday. Sometimes we have to tap into it, but once that balance starts growing you try and spend less to see how much higher it goes.

In the tips and tricks sense I try and plan at least one or two super cheap meals a week to offset the cost of my husband's expensive food taste. I put items in my online carts and wait a week to see how much I still love it to reduce impulse buying.

We cook at home 99% of the time, although we could certainly be better about meal planning. Also, neither my husband nor I have credit cards, so if we're going to buy it, we have to actually have the money for it :)

The two biggest ways we save money are by price matching for groceries and buying everything else we need at thrift stores, flea markets, etc. unless it needs to be new for some reason. :) We've found that if we make a list of the things we need and keep an eye out, we often find what we need sooner or later, even if it would be 'easier' to go out and buy it brand new. Plus, thrifting is my favorite.

I would love, love, love to win this!....my husband and I were just talking the other day about how we really need to set up a budget and unfortunately buying this wallet right now would not fit in our budget but I could see it really helping b/c you would only need to open each section when you need to pay for something from that particular category and it would let you see where you spend most/less by the end of the month. My best money saving tips....cook at home.....you get so much more food for your money & don't buy your cookbooks, either, look online at food blogs or check them out from the library and if they don't have the titile you want, request it..that's what I always do. :)

I've added missmoneybags to my Instagram :)I love clothes and fashion. I never pay full price! I like to make a game of finding the same thing I want at a much cheaper price or I wait for sales. Its a game for me ;)I've been in love with her wallets for a while now. It would be wonderful to have one :) Thanks!!

Following her on Instagram! Besides being a treasure hunter at thrift stores and estate/garage sales, I coupon and grow some of our own food. I could put that wallet to good use! :)
Thanks!

Wonderful giveaway! Thank you! I'm not following on instagram. We save money by rarely eating out - we almost always eat at home.

My hubs & I are about to try the "envelopes/buying with cash" & these wallets make me *way* more excited about that! Currently my favorite way to save money is shopping secondhand shops -however, the real truth is that I love thrifting and the fact that I am saving money is a bonus! P.S. now following on facebook.

I follow her on instagram and fb. I use a cash envelope system and would live one of her wallets. Using cash only really keeps us on track. You can't spend what you don't have!

Follow her on Instagram.
We made the decision to garden with my dad and his wife this year so we could have more produce. We haven been canning, freezing and dehydrating our pickings for this coming winter. We also joined a CSA during the winter months for fresh produce and to save money on our groceries. After we took our Dave Ramsey class we went to the envelope system. This helped us pay for our wedding in cash and still have extra money. :) We use our paper envelopes every week for groceries, eating out, and extra spending. We recently hired a financial advisor to help us make wise choices to paying off our student loans and how we can prepare our family in the future.

Followed on Facebook. One way we are saving money is by living with my in-laws while we build our house. I do most of the cooking so we shop the ads, eat venison instead of purchasing beef, and garden.

Followed her on instagram. My husband and I have struggled with how we manage our finances for the past 7 years. We made many poor unwise choices with our money. It wasnt until recently having a baby and quitting my job that we were 'forced' to change our ways. We started the Dave Ramsey envelope method and it has been such a blessing. We have learned to be wiser with how we save and spend. We save by using coupons for groceries and I thrift and go yard saling whenever possible. i love it. :) my email is bride2bee@msn.com

I love these! We (me, my husband, and our daughter) save money by making, mending, or receiving almost all of our clothes secondhand. Fashion is such a big part of consumer culture, so it's an interesting exercise.

I followed missmoneybags on IG. Thanks as always for a lovely blog post!

These wallets are so cute! We use the cash system, too. Some time soon, I'll have to upgrade from my plastic, $1 Target mini-file. :)
